EPISODE DESCRIPTIONIn this Season 2 opener of the CAPTN OffScript podcast, I bring together four incredibly talented creatives from across the world to talk about something that affects all of us in the industry – the current state of design. The landscape of design has shifted so dramatically over the past twenty years, and even in just the past five. From the decline of print, the constant reinvention of digital platforms, and the rise of AI tools, to the pressure of building personal brands and the ongoing debate about niching versus staying versatile – there’s so much to unpack. For this first roundtable conversation, I’m joined by James Martin, whose rebellious and refreshingly honest take on design and branding has inspired countless creatives. James Barnard, an award-winning logo designer and educator based in Australia, shares his own perspective shaped by his career spanning magazines, digital content, and teaching. Angela Lyons, a UK-based creative director and founder of Lyons Creative, brings more than two decades of experience in branding and editorial design, and a deep understanding of how the industry continues to change. And finally, Jennifer Taback, the co-founder of De Plume, an Indigenous woman-led studio in Canada, brings her unique perspective on design that blends strategy, storytelling, and cultural insight. Together, we dive into how design has evolved from the days of print to the digital-first era we’re in now, and what it means to be a “hybrid” creative who wears many hats. We talk openly about the challenges of personal branding in an age where authenticity is often performed rather than lived, and the pressure younger designers feel to succeed quickly in a world that glorifies overnight success. We share stories about failure, rejection, the lessons learned along the way, and the reality behind the curated highlight reels we so often see on social media. What I love most about this conversation is that it isn’t polished or scripted – it’s real. You’ll hear moments of disagreement, laughter, honesty, and even a few unexpected confessions. It’s the kind of discussion that reveals not just how we work as designers, but how we see ourselves as people navigating a constantly shifting creative industry. This is Part 1 of The Current State of Design, and it sets the stage for an even deeper dive in Part 2, which will be released on October 8th. If you’re a designer, a creative, or simply someone curious about where the design industry is heading, I think you’ll find this conversation eye-opening, relatable, and maybe even a little bit challenging.
